Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) provincial chair Jossey Buthane has reportedly defected back to the African National Congress (ANC).

While the ANC welcomed him back with open arms at the Solomon Mahlangu Memorial Lecture in Polokwane, it seems that the EFF management is unaware of his return to his original political home.

The memorial lecture, delivered by ANC Limpopo Party Provincial Secretary Reuben Madadzhe, was attended by prominent ANC figures such as ANC Peter Mokaba Regional Chair John Mpe, who also serves as the Mayor of Polokwane.

Buthane’s return to the ANC was accompanied by around 400 former EFF members from other regions, making it a significant blow for the EFF in the province.

ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) spokesperson Jimmy Machaka described Buthane as a seasoned cadre, emphasizing his experience and the positive value he brings to the ANC.

Machaka expressed confidence in Buthane’s ability to contribute to the ANC’s political agenda, particularly in the upcoming elections.

On the other hand, EFF Provincial Chair Tshilidzi Maraga refrained from commenting on the matter, citing a lack of tangible evidence to warrant a response.

When asked about his formal resignation from the EFF, Buthane asserted his autonomy, stating that he did not require permission from anyone to rejoin the ANC. He made it clear that his focus now is on working with the ANC to deliver much-needed services to the people of Limpopo.

Buthane emphasized his primary objective of bringing back those who had left the ANC for various reasons, underscoring his dedication to the party’s cause. However, some individuals view his political change of heart with cynicism.

An activist named Kagiso Sekokotla of Lephepane expressed scepticism regarding Buthane’s motives. According to Sekokotla, Buthane was allegedly disbanded by EFF Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema for failing to increase EFF votes in the 2021 elections.

During Buthane’s leadership, the EFF lost 25 council seats. Sekokotla believes that Buthane’s return to the ANC is opportunistic, considering his previous public disdain for the party.

While the true reasons behind Buthane’s decision remain unclear, his return to the ANC has undoubtedly caused a stir in the political landscape of Limpopo. The ANC stands to benefit from his experience and political acumen, while the EFF may face challenges in regaining lost support in the province.

Only time will tell how Buthane’s defection will impact the ANC’s electoral prospects and the EFF’s future in Limpopo. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is essential to closely monitor the actions and decisions of key political figures like Jossey Buthane.
