Former ANC Youth League president Collen Maine has made a significant return to the North West government. Premier Kagiso Mokgosi appointed Maine as the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports, and Recreation on Thursday.

This marks his re-entry into the province’s executive council, a position he previously held under former premiers Thandi Modise and Supra Mahumapelo between June 2013 and November 2015.

Maine’s political journey gained substantial attention when he was elected as the ANC Youth League president in September 2015. His presidency placed him in the national spotlight, though it was not without controversy.

His brief stint in Parliament beginning in May 2019 ended abruptly less than two months later, amid calls from league members for Collen Maine and his executive to step down in favour of new leadership.

Maine resisted these calls, expressing a desire to report back on his executive’s achievements and failures and to offer guidance to incoming leaders.

Premier Mokgosi emphasized that Maine’s appointment resulted from extensive consultations within and outside the government.

He stated, “This decision represents a dynamic interface between the exercise of the premier’s constitutional prerogative in terms of the constitution and the established democratic practice of consultation with the leadership of the province, national and the alliance (leadership).”

Mokgosi expressed confidence that the executive council of the seventh administration consists of individuals with high ethical standards committed to serving the people of North West.

Mokgosi highlighted that the composition of the executive council affirms their commitment to gender equality and representation. The council comprises a blend of institutional memory, fresh talents, and skills necessary to accelerate service delivery.

Mokgosi assured the people of North West that his administration would not disappoint, pledging to build on the foundations laid by the previous administration.
