The leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) is set to meet on Friday to address the party’s dismal performance in the recent elections. Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane confirmed this development as the reality of losing the majority vote began to sink in.
With 63.71% of the votes counted, the ANC stands at 41.86%, a significant drop compared to previous elections.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) follows with 22.88%, and the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has overtaken the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), securing 11.80% compared to the EFF’s 9.5%.

In the Northern Cape, the ANC leads with 49.27% of the votes, with the DA and EFF trailing at 21.25% and 12.87% respectively.
Mokonyane stated that the ANC leadership would be meeting today to consult and deliberate on the way forward. “There will be a meeting of the ANC leadership today. There will be a consultation out of the meeting of the national officials.
By tomorrow afternoon there will be an interaction with the nation,” she told the media at the National Results Operation Centre on Friday.
Regarding coalition possibilities, Mokonyane emphasized that any decisions would be made by the party’s constitutional structures, not by officials at the Results Operation Center. “We don’t toy around with coalitions; we reflect on what is good for the country and respect the will of voters.
That’s why we went into these elections with the full intention of absolute victory for the ANC,” she said. She further clarified that the future of any coalitional relationships would stem from the ANC’s constitutional bodies, ensuring the party’s strategic and democratic decision-making process.
As the ANC grapples with its declining voter base, the upcoming leadership meeting will be pivotal in determining the party’s future course. The nation waits eagerly to see the outcomes of these critical discussions and the ANC’s subsequent interaction with the public.
