The African National Congress (ANC) has recently come under scrutiny for increasing the size of the national cabinet.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced, on Sunday, a new cabinet comprising 75 ministers and deputy ministers. This expansion has made it one of the largest national executives in South Africa’s democratic history.
According to the ANC, the increase in cabinet size was necessary to ensure political cooperation and representation of multiple parties in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

ANC interim spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi emphasized that the election results indicated a public desire for a coalition government.
He stated, “That increase [of cabinet] is marginal in the context of the need to provide a balanced and reflective national executive that caters to the outcomes of the elections.
“So, the ANC acknowledges the president had to take this difficult position, in the interest of forging political progress and co-operation that is in the interest of the people.”
However, the decision has faced criticism from opposition parties. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have voiced their concerns, highlighting the financial burden this expanded cabinet would impose on taxpayers.
EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys remarked, “It is even more concerning that this cabinet has been increased and bloated, signalling more pressure on taxpayers to allow for the accommodation of racists and their policies in high positions of power.”
