The Moses Mabhida region of the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal is mourning the devastating loss of one of its members, Mzwandile “Nganono” Shandu. The councillor from the Mkhambathini municipality was gunned down in Umlazi on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the community in shock and grief.

Shandu’s death comes just a month after he miraculously survived an assassination attempt while attending a traditional ceremony in Umbumbulu, south of Durban. This tragic incident highlights the escalating violence and danger faced by those involved in political positions.

The circumstances surrounding Shandu’s death remain unknown, leaving the community and the ANC deeply concerned. Samorah Ndlovu, the ANC regional secretary, expressed his shock and condemnation, stating,

“It’s very unfortunate that this incident took place just weeks after an attempt on Shandu’s life and also the shooting of councillor Mabhungu Mkhize, who is from the same region.

The ANC is really taken aback by these barbaric killings.” Ndlovu urged law enforcement agencies to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators. In response to the increasing threat to their councillors, the Mkhambathini municipality has been taking proactive measures to enhance their safety.

Discussions were underway to provide bodyguards for Shandu, and a special council meeting had been held to address this matter. Unfortunately, these measures were not implemented in time to prevent this tragic loss.

Mzwandile Shandu served as the chairperson of the municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC). His dedication and hard work were recognized and appreciated by his colleagues and the community he served.

Before entering politics, Shandu had worked at Toyota in Isipingo, showcasing his commitment to both public service and economic development.

Nhlakanipho Ntombela, the mayor of Mkhambathini, expressed his deep sadness over Shandu’s killing, describing him as a dedicated individual who had selflessly devoted his time to serving the community of Ward 7.

Ntombela emphasized the importance of the police leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice for Shandu’s senseless murder.

In memory of Mzwandile Shandu, the ANC will remember him as a humble and dedicated servant of the people.

He had faithfully upheld the aspirations and values of the ANC since assuming his role in 2016. His loss will be deeply felt by his colleagues, friends, family, and the entire community he served.
