A sergeant attached to the SAPS Secunda Flying Squad has been arrested in connection with an investigation into an alleged truck hijacking in Mpumalanga.
The police officer was arrested on Friday following an investigation into a truck hijacking that took place in May 2026.
The investigation was subsequently transferred to the Mpumalanga Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit, which continued probing the circumstances surrounding the hijacking.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Mavela Masondo said four suspects had already been arrested in July as part of the investigation.
Further investigations allegedly uncovered information pointing to the involvement of a police officer in the planning of the hijacking.
Police Sergeant Linked To Mpumalanga Truck Hijacking Investigation
The latest arrest marks a development in the investigation as police continue to establish the roles allegedly played by those involved in the truck hijacking.
Police have not disclosed the identity of the arrested sergeant or provided further details about the allegations against the officer.

Mpumalanga police commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise welcomed the arrest and said the SAPS would continue taking action against members suspected of criminal conduct.
“One could say it is disappointing and regrettable, but this should send a clear message that we can never tolerate criminality within our ranks. It also demonstrates that the SAPS is committed to cleaning its own house without fear or favour. Those who dare to be involved in corrupt activities within our ranks will not be spared.
“We commend the Organised Crime Investigation team for their thorough investigation, which led to this arrest, and we assure the public that we will continue to act decisively against any member who betrays the badge and brings the service into disrepute,” said Modise.
Mpumalanga Police Vow Action Against Corrupt Members
The commissioner said the arrest demonstrated that police members suspected of criminal activity would not be protected because of their positions within the service.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities expected to establish the full extent of the alleged police officer’s involvement and whether other individuals could face further action.

The arrest comes after the four suspects were detained in July following the May truck hijacking.
Police have yet to provide details on the charges the sergeant will face or when the officer is expected to appear in court.
