The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has revealed that a luxury Bentley linked to alleged tender fraud suspect Hangwani Maumela was sold despite a court order preventing its disposal.
Maumela is being investigated for his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of tenders connected to Tembisa Hospital.
Investigators from the SIU conducted a raid at the Omar Den dealership in Emalahleni on Friday in an effort to recover the Bentley, valued at approximately R3 million.
SIU Raid Leads To Admission Over Missing Bentley
According to the SIU, officials initially encountered resistance when attempting to locate the vehicle at the dealership.
The dealership reportedly failed to produce the Bentley during the raid. It later emerged that the vehicle had already been sold, despite an existing court order barring any such transaction.
The admission has added a new dimension to the investigation surrounding assets linked to Maumela.
SIU Pursues Criminal And Civil Action In Investigation
SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho said the unit would continue to pursue all available legal avenues where wrongdoing is identified.
“SIU has also referred any evidence of criminal conduct uncovered during its investigation to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action.
“Under the SIU Act, the SIU is also authorised to initiate civil proceedings in the high court or a Special Tribunal in its name to address any wrongdoing identified during its investigation in order, inter alia, to recover any losses suffered by the state,” said Makgotho.
