South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Naledi Pandor, has reiterated her claim that Israel is disregarding an order from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to restrain its military actions in Gaza.

This comes as South Africa has once again approached the court to address Israel’s escalation of military operations in Rafah, which is now the only safe zone for Palestinians.

During a debate on the State of the Nation Address (SONA), Minister Pandor highlighted the global recognition and support that South Africa’s decision to pursue a genocide case against Israel has garnered.

She expressed her dismay at those who believe that South Africa should prioritize domestic issues over international human rights concerns.

Minister Pandor emphasized the significance of the case, as it involves a country from the Global South urging the world’s highest court to hold a country from the Global North accountable for violations of the Geneva Convention.

She also criticized the Democratic Alliance (DA) for condemning war crimes in Ukraine but failing to respond similarly to Israel’s actions. The Minister concluded her speech with chants of “Free Palestine” from African National Congress (ANC) MPs, many of whom were wearing traditional Arab scarves.

South Africa’s persistent pursuit of justice for the Palestinian people and its commitment to international human rights issues underscore the country’s influential role on the global stage.

Minister Of International Relations Pandor’s remarks highlight the importance of holding all nations accountable for their actions, regardless of their geopolitical status.
