Eastern Cape’s Social Development MEC, Bukiwe Fanta, has voiced deep concern over the horrific reports of three children being allegedly raped at private schools in Matatiele.
The incidents that took place last year have shaken both the local community and the officials who are now investigating the cases.

Fanta, who visited the area alongside Sindisiwe Chikunga, Minister in the Presidency for Women, Children, and Persons with Disabilities, condemned the brutal attacks. “These are not just isolated incidents; they are a reflection of a much larger issue that needs immediate attention,” Fanta said.
Tragic Victims: Young Lives Changed Forever
The victims of these violent assaults include a six-year-old boy and two girls. The cases involve two independent schools in the area, with one girl and the boy attending Vuka Rise Independent School.
Fanta expressed her disbelief that children, who should feel safe at school, have been subjected to such trauma. “School should be a sanctuary for children, not a place where they are harmed,” Fanta stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
The community remains in shock over these heart-wrenching crimes, and many are questioning how such incidents could occur at institutions that are expected to provide a secure environment for their students.
Call for Greater Oversight at All Schools
Fanta has called for stronger monitoring and evaluation systems to be put in place at all schools—whether private or public.
She stressed the need for vigilance to ensure the safety of children in educational settings. “We cannot afford to be complacent. The safety of our children must be a priority,” she added.
