A tragic accident on the M4 Ruth First Highway in Durban has claimed the life of a young woman. The collision, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, left the woman fighting for her life before she tragically passed away in the hospital.
The accident took place around 3:30 pm as the woman, believed to be in her 20s, was traveling northbound. According to Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics, the scene of the accident was one of total chaos.
Two vehicles had collided head-on, causing one of them to overturn and come to rest on its roof. Emergency responders, including paramedics and the Durban Fire Department, quickly arrived at the scene.

The female driver was found to be severely entrapped in her vehicle. The Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment were used to free her from the wreckage, while Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilize her critical condition.
Once freed from the wreckage, the woman was placed on a manual ventilator and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for the urgent care she required. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of paramedics and doctors, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away in the hospital.
The second driver involved in the collision, a male in his twenties, also sustained serious injuries. He was stabilized on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
The accident resulted in the closure of the entire northbound carriageway as emergency personnel worked diligently to attend to the scene. The South African Police Service (SAPS) was in attendance and will be investigating to determine the events leading up to the collision.
