Controversial author Jackie Phamotse is set to appear in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday for her sentencing. Phamotse was found guilty of criminal defamation, crimen injuria, and contempt of court in 2023.
The charges stem from comments she made on Twitter in 2018 about former Miss South Africa and entrepreneur Basetsana Kumalo and her husband, businessman Romeo.
The comments made by Jackie Phamotse revolved around an alleged sex tape involving the Kumalos and a young rapper. As a result of these comments, the couple sought a protection order against Phamotse.

During the court proceedings, Phamotse maintained that there was no truth to her comments and that she had posted them as part of her writing process. However, she was ultimately convicted in June.
Sentencing proceedings were initially scheduled for earlier this month but were postponed due to a request from Phamotse’s legal team. The postponement was made to allow for the completion a social worker’s report, which is expected to provide additional insights into Phamotse’s background and circumstances.
The sentencing in this case is significant as it will determine the consequences Phamotse will face for her actions. Criminal defamation, crimen injuria, and contempt of court are serious offences that can carry severe penalties. Phamotse’s legal team will likely present arguments in mitigation, while the prosecution will seek an appropriate punishment.
