City Power is diligently working to restore power to parts of Johannesburg that have been affected by the recent underground fire along the M1. However, the utility emphasizes that the restoration efforts will only resume once all safety standards have been met.
The extent of the damage to the electricity infrastructure is significant, as it stretches far into the underground tunnels.
As a result, further assessments are being conducted to fully understand the scope of the damage. City Power spokesperson, Isaac Magena, explains that gas level inspections are currently underway.

In addition to addressing the electrical infrastructure, the Johannesburg Emergency Services team is also focused on clearing the residual smoke and other gaseous toxins underneath the tunnels.
This process involves providing clean air ventilation to ensure the safety of the restoration teams.
Once the area has been deemed safe, the restoration work will commence. This will involve removing the rubble, clearing any oil spills, and draining excess water from the tunnels. Johannesburg Water has been called in to assist with the water drainage process.
City Power understands the inconvenience caused by the power outage and is working tirelessly to restore electricity to the affected areas.
