Actress Leleti Khumalo has recently paid tribute to her ex-husband, playwright, and musician Mbongeni Ngema, who tragically passed away in a car accident while returning from a funeral in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.

In a heartfelt statement, Khumalo expressed her deep sadness and shock at the loss of Ngema, highlighting his role as a pioneer of protest theatre and his lasting legacy in the theatre world.

Their love story began during the filming of the iconic movie “Sarafina!” where they met and eventually tied the knot in 1992.

However, their marriage was not without its challenges, and after 14 years, they decided to go their separate ways amidst allegations of abuse. Despite not having children together, their bond and shared experiences were undoubtedly significant.

In an interview with Nicky Greenwall, Leleti Khumalo opened up about the difficulties she faced in her marriage, stating that she felt restricted and unable to live a normal life.

She revealed that she was not allowed to pursue different plays and felt trapped in a cycle of trying to please others. It was a life that left her yearning for more freedom and self-expression.

Reflecting on her decision to end the marriage, Khumalo shared with Anele Mdoda on Real Talk, “I lived my 14 years of marriage for people. I wanted to please people, and I stayed. I woke up one morning and told myself, that’s it. I don’t know what sparked it. I released a statement that we were divorcing.”
