The fraud and corruption case involving suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and municipal manager Kagiso Lerutla has been postponed until next month.
The matter briefly came before the Boksburg Regional Court on Monday, where the defence confirmed it had received additional disclosure from the State as the case continues.
Julius Mkhwanazi And Kagiso Lerutla Case Postponed To August
The court postponed proceedings to 21 August to allow the defence to obtain further information that is still expected from the prosecution.
According to the State, it requires until the end of July to provide the outstanding details requested by the defence.
The postponement was granted after both parties updated the court on the progress of the disclosure process.
Fraud And Corruption Charges Against Ekurhuleni Officials
Mkhwanazi and Lerutla are facing multiple charges, including fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
The allegations relate to an incident dating back to 2019. Prosecutors claim Lerutla paid R400,000 to Mkhwanazi and another individual who allegedly impersonated him in court after he was arrested for speeding.

The State alleges the arrangement allowed Lerutla to attend an interview for the City of Ekurhuleni’s chief financial officer position instead of appearing in court.

Lerutla’s legal representative, Masekela Masenya, criticised the delay in finalising the disclosure process.

Masenya argued that the continued postponements are unfair to his client as the case remains unresolved.
The matter is expected to return to the Boksburg Regional Court on 21 August, when proceedings are scheduled to continue after the defence has received the remaining information from the State.
