The KZN police have announced the arrest of six suspects in the murders of popular South African hip hop star AKA, whose real name is Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, and his friend Tibz who was killed in February 2023.
The tragic incident occurred at a well-known club in Durban. The arrests, which took place as early as last October, were made in connection with parallel murder cases.

During a media briefing on Tuesday evening, Police Minister Bheki Cele shared this crucial information with the public.
The diligent investigations conducted by the police have resulted in the apprehension of six individuals involved in the crime. Among the arrested are the shooters, spotters, and the coordinator of the hit.
It is worth noting that four out of the six suspects currently in custody are also being investigated for other parallel cases by the South African Police Service (SAPS). Additionally, two more individuals suspected to be involved in the murders are currently located in Swaziland.
The victims, Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and Tibello ‘Tibs’ Motsoane were tragically shot dead outside Wish on Florida in Durban in February of last year. The details surrounding the motive for the crime are still under investigation.
During the media briefly, the police told reporters that the investigation revealed that AKA was the primary target of the hit as he was trailed from the airport to the hotel. The police spokesperson also hinted that the original plan was to shoot him in the car.
However, the hitmen became impatient and decided to fire the shots in front of the restaurant. “We know how much they were paid each. We know who coordinated them and many more, but will not say now,” the police spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Swaziland officials released more information about the people in detention and their participation in AKA’s death, putting pressure on South African police to act as they have.
Minister Cele expressed disappointment that Swaziland’s authorities went to the media with the information they obtained rather than the South African police.
