Criminal charges have been laid against controversial North West businessman Suliman Carrim for failing to comply with an order to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
According to commission spokesperson Jermy Michaels, the case was opened last week following an instruction from the commission’s chairperson, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
Carrim had been ordered to appear before the commission in person in August. Alternatively, he was required to undergo an independent medical assessment to determine whether he was fit to testify.
He has reportedly done neither.
Suliman Carrim Case Referred To Police Task Team
Michaels said the matter has now been referred to the Commission Task Team, which is led by the police.
The charges follow continued efforts by the commission to secure Carrim’s participation in its proceedings.

Justice Madlanga had previously indicated that opening a criminal case was necessary to protect the integrity of the inquiry.

The businessman’s failure to comply with the commission’s directive comes as the inquiry continues examining allegations of corruption, criminal networks and alleged links between individuals and law-enforcement structures.
The commission has yet to indicate when Carrim may be required to appear following the laying of the charges.
