A 34-year-old motorist has been arrested in Kempton Park after allegedly travelling at 199km/h in a zone with a 120km/h speed limit. The driver was caught during a high-speed enforcement operation conducted by Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. He was subsequently arrested and charged with exceeding the prescribed speed limit.
Kempton Park Driver Caught At 199km/H By EMPD
The Kempton Park speeding arrest followed an operation in which EMPD officers used a ProLaser 4 speed-measuring device to monitor motorists. EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa said officers recorded a grey BMW X1 travelling at 199km/h in a 120km/h zone. The vehicle was stopped immediately after the alleged infringement was detected.
“While conducting high-speed law enforcement operations, using a ProLaser 4 speed-measuring device, officers recorded a grey BMW X1 travelling at 199 km/h in a 120 km/h zone,” Thepa said.
According to Thepa, the motorist was unable to provide officers with a satisfactory explanation for travelling at what she described as an excessive speed. The driver was then arrested and charged with exceeding the prescribed speed limit. The incident resulted in the motorist being taken into custody.
EMPD Arrests Motorist Over Excessive Speed
The EMPD speeding operation forms part of the department’s efforts to enforce road regulations and address dangerous driving. The driver was detained at Kempton Park Police Station following his arrest. He is expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.
“The vehicle was immediately stopped, and the driver failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for travelling at such excessive speed. The suspect was arrested and charged with exceeding the prescribed speed limit,” Thepa said.

Thepa warned motorists that exceeding the speed limit remains a serious road safety concern. She said EMPD officers would continue enforcing traffic laws and taking action against motorists who break them.

“One of the leading contributing factors to road fatalities is exceeding the speed limit. The EMPD is enforcing a zero tolerance for law-breaking perpetrators; they will face the full might of the law.
“The EMPD further implores motorists to always adhere to the rules of the road and practice caution while operating a motor vehicle on the public road,” Thepa said.
