The brother of 17-year-old Cameron Waldeck-Cooks has spoken publicly for the first time since the St Stithians Girls’ College learner was found dead at a lodge in Sabie, Mpumalanga. Cameron was discovered alongside 19-year-old Ethan Coetzee, a former learner at St Stithians Boys’ College, on Monday, 3 August.
The deaths of the two teenagers were initially investigated by police through an inquest docket after officers were called to the lodge following a report that two people had died. When police arrived, they found a 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl dead inside the lodge room.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said both teenagers were certified dead at the scene. Police initially opened an inquest docket, but the investigation later changed following the findings of post-mortem examinations.

Cameron Waldeck-Cooks’ death is now being investigated after post-mortem results indicated that she had allegedly been strangled. Masondo confirmed that the examination results pointed to alleged strangulation in Cameron’s case, while Coetzee allegedly took his own life.
The findings followed earlier reports that police had not initially suspected foul play in the deaths. A private post-mortem was also reportedly conducted at the request of Cameron’s parents, with the results indicating that the teenager may have died from strangulation.

Police have not publicly released further details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The investigation remains focused on establishing what happened before the teenagers were found inside the Sabie lodge.
Cameron Waldeck-Cooks’ Brother Shares Emotional Account
Cameron Waldeck-Cooks’ brother, Ethan Waldeck-Cooks, addressed the teenager’s death in a post shared on Instagram. In the message, he described the condition in which his sister was discovered and spoke about the impact her death has had on the family.
“My sister Cameron Waldeck-Cooks was found dead on Sunday, 02 August 2026. Her corpse lay lifeless with injuries on several parts of her body,” he wrote.
“She was murdered by Ethan Coetzee,” he said, alleging that Coetzee strangled his sister to death and that she did not die peacefully.
The family has been left dealing with the aftermath of Cameron Waldeck-Cooks’ death following the discovery at the Mpumalanga lodge. Her brother said the events surrounding her death had caused lasting trauma for those close to her.

He said the family would never forget what happened to the teenager. “It is important that I share this,” he concluded his post.
The police investigation follows the post-mortem findings, with authorities expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths of both teenagers.
