Severe weather conditions are disrupting daily life across parts of South Africa, with some schools closed, peak-hour traffic affected and electricity supplies disrupted.
The country remains under a spell of snowfall, strong winds and rain, while emergency services in Gauteng have been placed on high alert as authorities prepare for possible weather-related incidents.
Residents have also been warned to take care when using heaters and other heating appliances, with authorities urging caution around devices used to keep warm during the cold conditions.
KZN Roads Monitored As Snowfall Affects Travel
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is closely monitoring road conditions in areas experiencing snowfall, particularly along key routes used by motorists travelling between the province and surrounding areas.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya provided an update on conditions along several roads, including the N3 and N11.
“Weather is overcast from Cedara towards Midway along the N3. It is drizzling from Harrismith towards Van Reenen. N11 Amajuba Pass is open – both directions. Snow is beginning to clear towards Memel. Bothas Pass to Memel is clear.”
Snow And Rain Continue To Affect Key Routes
Motorists travelling through affected areas are being advised to remain alert as weather conditions can change quickly, particularly on roads where snowfall, rain or reduced visibility may affect driving conditions.
The latest update indicates that the N11 Amajuba Pass remains open in both directions, while snow has started clearing towards Memel.

Conditions between Cedara and Midway remain overcast, while drizzle has been reported between Harrismith and Van Reenen.
Bothas Pass towards Memel has also been reported clear.
