Police forensic expert Captain Laurence Makgotloe is expected to find out on Friday whether he will be released on bail as the Pretoria Magistrates Court prepares to deliver its ruling.
The court reserved judgment after hearing final arguments from both the prosecution and defence last week.
During proceedings, Makgotloe’s legal team described him as a committed family man and a veteran police officer with no prior criminal convictions, arguing that he should be granted bail.

Makgotloe is facing charges relating to the alleged tampering of key ballistic evidence in a number of prominent murder investigations, including the April 2024 killing of engineer Armand Swart.
His arrest followed testimony presented before the Madlanga Commission concerning alleged interference with ballistic evidence connected to Swart’s murder.
Ballistic Evidence Allegations At Centre Of Bail Case
The State has also linked Makgotloe to allegations involving a similar offence that allegedly dates back to 2018.
According to evidence before the court, members of the Madlanga Commission task team allegedly found Makgotloe in possession of 38 rounds of ammunition when they arrested him at his Pretoria home in May.
Earlier this month, prosecutors submitted an amended charge sheet that includes two counts of being an accessory after the fact to murder, along with a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition.
State And Defence Present Contrasting Arguments
The prosecution maintains that Makgotloe is a compromised police officer who presents a flight risk and may interfere with ongoing investigations if released on bail.
The defence, however, achieved an early success in the proceedings when the court ruled that evidence derived directly from Makgotloe’s testimony before the Madlanga Commission could not be used for the purposes of the bail application.
