At a powerful rally in Sharpeville, Gauteng, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema launched a scathing critique of South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU), accusing it of failing to address the country’s deepening unemployment crisis.

Speaking to an energized crowd at the Dlomo Dam, Malema argued that South Africa’s youth have no reason to support a government that continues to allow soaring unemployment rates, which he claims have left many young South Africans without opportunities.

“The youth of South Africa has no reason whatsoever to support the GNU,” Malema declared, highlighting the government’s inability to combat the nation’s staggering unemployment rate, which currently stands at 47%. His remarks resonated with a crowd deeply frustrated by the government’s inaction.

A Government of Cowards: Malema’s Harsh Critique

The EFF leader did not hold back in his criticism, calling the GNU a “government of cowards” that is “preserving the poverty of black people.”

Malema specifically highlighted the dire situation faced by black South Africans, especially black women, who continue to suffer under policies that he believes fail to create meaningful change.

“The government is not doing enough to empower the black population, and as a result, inequality and poverty remain entrenched,” Malema said, emphasizing the urgent need for leadership that will break the cycle of poverty and create opportunities for all South Africans.

Honoring the Legacy of the Sharpeville Massacre

Malema also used the rally as an opportunity to honour the victims of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre, where dozens of protesters were killed by police during demonstrations against the apartheid-era pass laws.

EFF marked the occasion by reaffirming its commitment to the ideals of equality and justice that were central to the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom.

He reminded the crowd that the spirit of the 1960 protest lives on, emphasizing that the fight against injustice is not over. “Our people stood courageously against injustice, demanding an end to the Pass Law that restricted their movement in their own land. But instead of being met with dialogue, they were met with bullets,” Malema said.

He described the Sharpeville Massacre as more than just a tragic event; it was a declaration of war by the apartheid regime against the black majority, exposing the brutality of white minority rule to the world.

In closing, Malema reiterated that Nelson Mandela’s dream of an equal South Africa has yet to be realized, a sentiment that continues to resonate as the country struggles with persistent economic disparities.
