Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has caused a stir on social media with his recent statement that he would give the African National Congress (ANC) the EFF vote, but with one condition.
As the upcoming elections approach, multiple polls and political analysts predict that the ANC will receive less than 50% of the vote.
In an interview with JJ Tabane on Frank Dialogue, Malema stated that he was prepared to give the ANC his party’s vote, but only if they met his demand of appointing Floyd Shivambu as the Minister of Finance.
Malema emphasized that his main focus is on implementing EFF policies, rather than occupying the highest seat in office. He believes that the problem with larger parties like the ANC is that they are driven by ego and struggle to differentiate between power and glory.
Malema argued that by taking control of the finance department, which he sees as the root of many anti-poor policies, the EFF can effectively implement its agenda without needing to hold the presidency.
Malema also took the opportunity to defend his party against allegations of corruption, particularly about the VBS Mutual Bank scandal.
Earlier this year, Floyd Shivambu, a prominent member of the EFF, was found to have received R180,000 from Sgameka Projects in 2017, a company implicated in the looting of VBS Mutual Bank.
Shivambu’s failure to disclose this payment resulted in the docking of his pay by parliament’s joint committee on ethics and members’ interests.
Malema dismissed these allegations as engineered attempts to discredit the EFF. He pointed out that the EFF government in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, and Nelson Mandela Bay has not been implicated in any corruption scandals.
Julius Malema highlighted the EFF’s intolerance towards corruption and their commitment to running their affairs with transparency and accountability.
