On Wednesday, the Electoral Commission (IEC) formally opened the national results operation centre (ROC) ahead of the elections.
The centre will serve as the primary location for political parties, observers, and the media to get real-time election results. For the first time, the centre will be located at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.
Since the first democratic elections in 1994, the IEC has chosen the Tshwane Events hub as its national results operation hub. However, because of negligence and vandalism, the IEC has been forced to seek alternative accommodations.
Masego Sheburi, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, stated that they were pleased with the Gallagher Convention Centre.
“The facility is fit for purpose, it’s an exhibition facility, so most of the base infrastructure is here. Our preference would have been to use a state facility. It has not been possible this time around, so we must make Gallagher work as a results centre.”
Sheburi stated that the IEC was prepared to conduct free and fair elections next Wednesday. For the time being, the center is buzzing with activity as IEC officials finalize plans for the official debut.
A significant media contingent is also present, preparing to cover the seventh democratic election.
