South Africa is gearing up for a significant cabinet lekgotla involving the Government of National Unity (GNU) partners.

This much-anticipated meeting will see eleven political parties, including the United Democratic Movement (UDM), the Good Party, and the Pan African Congress (PAC) of Azania, come together to draft policies for the next five years.

The event, which will take place later this week, holds particular importance as it aims to prioritize social security for the poor.

UDM Secretary-General Yongama Zigebe has emphasized that the upcoming cabinet lekgotla should focus on protecting the most vulnerable members of society.

Zigebe advocates for initiatives that aim to reduce poverty and inequality, highlighting the need to expand access to healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas. Strengthening social safety nets to shield the poor is seen as a top priority for the UDM.

Brett Herron, the Secretary-General of the Good Party, echoes similar sentiments. Despite securing only one seat in the National Assembly, the Good Party insists that the government’s program of action should prioritize addressing inequality and various forms of injustice—social, economic, spatial, and environmental.

Herron asserts that tackling these issues will ensure that the constitution is inclusive and benefits all South Africans.

The PAC, represented by Secretary-General Apa Pooe, has a strong stance on land restitution. Pooe calls for a comprehensive and accelerated approach to land redistribution and rural development.

The PAC expects decisive action from the upcoming cabinet meeting to address these issues effectively, advocating for what they term a revolutionary liberation struggle objective. Improving the quality of life in rural areas is seen as crucial by the PAC.

The cabinet lekgotla, scheduled for July 13 and 14, is set to be a landmark event, bringing together a diverse set of political voices to shape South Africa’s future policies.

The focus on social security, healthcare access, and land restitution underscores the collective effort to address long-standing inequalities and improve the lives of the most vulnerable citizens.
