Build One SA (BOSA) leader, Mmusi Maimane, has issued a rallying call to President Cyril Ramaphosa as he embarks on his second term, this time leading a government of national unity (GNU) pact.
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika during the presidential inauguration, Mmusi Maimane emphasized the need for decisive leadership, urging Ramaphosa to be strong and not overly consensus-seeking.
President Ramaphosa has often been criticized for his indecisive leadership style, with many political commentators pointing out his tendency to consult extensively before making decisions.

Maimane believes this approach is not conducive to the current political climate and that Ramaphosa must adopt a different strategy. “I pray that he has the decision-making capability, the resolute vision, and the execution to go with,” said Maimane.
Maimane further highlighted the necessity of building a strong governing coalition. He stressed that strong leadership naturally attracts followers, while a focus on consensus could lead to the coalition falling apart due to a lack of a unifying force.
“The ultimate test is how his party behaves post the inauguration because there’ll be less patronage,” Maimane remarked. He pointed out that a capable government is essential for the state to function at its best, free from political capture.
While Maimane’s party has not yet decided on joining the GNU, he sees this moment as an opportunity to create a capable government. “This moment is an opportunity to free up space for the state to do its job.
Whatever the political ramifications are, coalitions are normal all over the world,” he said. Maimane believes that the only way to safeguard against the pitfalls of coalitions is to ensure the state operates independently and effectively.
