A woman who is believed to have started a deadly fire at a building in Johannesburg will be appearing before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court this morning. The fire, which occurred yesterday morning, resulted in the loss of two lives and left four others injured.
The spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services, Nana Radebe-Kgiba, stated that the deceased individuals were found on the first floor of the building, while the injured individuals had jumped from the balcony in an attempt to escape the blaze.
Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda, who visited the scene, confirmed that the woman responsible for the fire was caught on CCTV pouring paraffin before setting the two-storey building ablaze. The building in question was reportedly a hijacked property.

The woman now faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and arson. Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, stated, “A 30-year-old woman was arrested and is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday on charges of murder.”
The fire not only claimed lives but also left more than 150 people homeless. These individuals were staying in shacks inside the building. Joburg Mayor Gwamanda mentioned that the city is currently working on relocating these individuals to temporary emergency accommodation.
Gwamanda further explained that the relocation process would require collaboration with the national government, as financial assistance would be needed to allocate the necessary facilities. The mayor plans to visit the scene again this morning to assess the situation and ensure that appropriate measures are being taken.
