In a significant development in the ongoing murder trial of Senzo Meyiwa, one of the accused, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Sibiya, who was the first of the five men accused in the case, has been found guilty of dealing in drugs and possession of ammunition. The sentencing took place at the Tembisa magistrate’s court on Thursday.

The magistrate, in delivering the sentence, highlighted that Sibiya had quickly established himself as a non-law-abiding citizen, posing a danger to society. However, the magistrate expressed the belief that Sibiya had the potential to change his ways.

Along with the 10-year sentence, Sibiya has also been handed a five-year term for the possession of drugs charge, and an additional five-year term for the possession of ammunition.

It has been declared that Sibiya is unfit to possess a firearm. These sentences will run concurrently with the 10-year sentence. Sibiya has expressed his intention to appeal the verdict.

The trial for the murder of Senzo Meyiwa will continue, with Sibiya due to appear before the Pretoria High Court on Monday.

Meyiwa, a prominent South African footballer and captain of the national team, was tragically shot and killed in 2014. The case has garnered significant attention and has been a subject of public interest for many years.
