President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed profound sadness following the tragic death of two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The soldiers, part of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission, lost their lives in a mortar attack on their base in Sake, located in the eastern region of the DRC.
The attack also left 20 other soldiers injured, prompting the President to offer his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and their colleagues.

As the Commander in Chief of the SANDF, President Ramaphosa has assured the bereaved families and the injured troops that they will receive necessary logistical and psycho-social support.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that the affected individuals are taken care of during this difficult time.
The President acknowledged the sacrifices made by these soldiers for the cause of peace and stability in the SADC region and emphasized that their dedication will not be forgotten.
The SADC mission in the DRC, which includes troops from South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania, was deployed in December to address the increasing conflicts and instability in the region caused by the resurgence of armed groups.
The mission aims to restore peace and security in the eastern parts of the DRC. The recent attack underscores the dangers faced by these peacekeeping forces and highlights their bravery and commitment to the mission.
As the nation mourns the loss of these brave soldiers, President Ramaphosa has called for a collective appreciation of their sacrifices. He stated that the contributions of the SANDF troops towards regional stability and peace are invaluable, and their legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
The President’s message serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to achieve peace in conflict-ridden areas and the personal costs borne by those who serve in such missions.
