The South African Police Service (SAPS) is trying to win back highly skilled members who have left for the private security sector in search of better pay and working conditions.

Specifically, around 58 members from the esteemed Special Task Force (STF) and National Intervention Unit (NIU) have recently opted to pursue opportunities in the private sector.

To ensure that these members do not permanently leave the police force, SAPS management has taken steps to improve working conditions and remuneration.

They have even tripled the danger pay for STF and NIU members, from R4,000 to R21,000 per month. This increase is in addition to their regular salaries.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has acknowledged the concerns of the members who have left and has taken action to address the issue.

He stated that improvements have been made to their working conditions, but he also recognizes that many of these individuals are motivated by their passion for the work and the pride they take in wearing the police badge.

Cele expressed confidence that these efforts will help stem the tide of members leaving for the private sector. By offering better remuneration and working conditions, SAPS aims to entice highly skilled individuals to remain within the police force.
