The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has recently dismissed social media posts that falsely claimed 13 people were killed in gang-related incidents in Johannesburg this week.

Brigadier Brenda Muridili clarified the actual situation, providing accurate statistics and details about the incidents that occurred.

According to Brigadier Muridili, police recorded only three cases of murder this week, all of which took place in Westbury, Sophiatown.

She emphasized that there were no gang-related murders in other areas such as Eldorado Park, Riverlea, and Noordgesig. This clarification aims to dispel the misinformation circulating on social media.

In a significant development, police arrested one of the most wanted gang-affiliated suspects, Morgan John, also known as Big John, on Thursday.

He is alleged to be involved in a murder case and appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Currently remanded in custody, Morgan John is scheduled to appear in court again on 29 June 2024.

Brigadier Muridili assured the public that the province has effective interventions in place in all gang-violence affected areas.

These areas include Sophiatown (Westbury), Langlaagte (Riverlea), Eldorado Park (Ext 1 to 4), Orlando (Noordgesig), Reigerpark, and Booysens (Bella Vista). The SAPS continues to work diligently to maintain law and order and prevent gang violence in these communities.
