Today, Deputy President Paul Mashatile will deliver the keynote address commemorating the Langa Massacre, a sombre occasion that marks a significant moment in South Africa’s history.
The event will take place in Kariega, Eastern Cape, where the Langa Memorial site stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in the fight for justice and freedom.
Mashatile’s speech is expected to honour those who lost their lives in the tragic event, which occurred 40 years ago, while also acknowledging the ongoing hardships faced by the victims’ families.
Major Investments in Langa Memorial Site to Honor the Fallen
To ensure a meaningful and respectful commemoration, the Nelson Mandela Municipality has allocated R5 million to the event.
This funding will go toward a major facelift of the Langa Memorial site, which is set to include a wreath-laying ceremony with Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Ministers, and the families of those affected.

Ongoing Struggles for the Families: A Legacy of Broken Promises
While the event will focus on remembrance, it also casts a light on the enduring struggles faced by the families of the victims. Despite 40 years passing since the massacre, many of the affected families continue to grapple with a lack of housing, stable employment, and financial support.
The failure to fulfil promises made in the aftermath of the massacre remains a bitter reality for many. Among those still suffering is 75-year-old Hombakazi Solomon, who tragically lost her husband, the family’s breadwinner, in the massacre.

Solomon shared her deep sense of loss and frustration, stating, “I am still devastated. I remember receiving the news even today.
“We are still disappointed with empty promises. It’s been 40 years, and this democracy my husband fought for has done nothing for my family. Instead, it brings back painful memories.”
