Minister of International Relations Naledi Pandor is set to fly to The Hague, where the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will rule on South Africa’s case against Israel.

South Africa approached the United Nations’ top court, requesting an order for emergency measures in response to Israel’s armed assault in Gaza.

Pandor will attend the ruling on Friday when the 17-judge panel will respond to South Africa’s request for an interim ruling in the historic genocide case.

Earlier in January, South Africa requested that the International Court of Justice seek an emergency suspension of Israel’s destructive military operation in Gaza.

It maintained that temporary measures were essential “to protect against further, severe, and irreparable harm to the rights of the Palestinian people under the Genocide Convention,” which it claimed were still being abused with impunity.

South Africa filed nine directions with the court. Among them is a petition for an order instructing Israel to halt all military operations in Gaza.

Meanwhile, provisional measures may be allowed if South Africa demonstrates sufficient evidence that claims under the Genocide Convention are feasible and that the Palestinian population in Gaza suffers a real and urgent threat.
