The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that Oscar Pistorius, the South African athlete who was convicted of the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, has been released on parole.

Pistorius, who was sentenced to 13 years behind bars in 2014, has now been admitted into the system of Community Corrections and is back at home.

Pistorius claimed that he had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder when he heard a noise in the middle of the night in the bathroom, leading him to fire shots through the locked door.

After careful consideration, the Department of Correctional Services decided to grant him parole, stating that his elevated public profile does not make him different from other inmates and does not warrant inconsistent treatment.

Oscar Pistorius will be subject to general parole conditions, including specific hours when he is expected to be at home. He is also prohibited from consuming alcohol and other substances.

Additionally, he will be required to participate in programs identified by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB). Like other parolees, Pistorius is restricted from conducting media interviews.

Singabakho Nxumalo, the spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, emphasized the importance of providing support to newly placed parolees.

Adjusting to normal life after incarceration can be challenging, and having a support system in place is crucial for their successful reintegration.
