A woman and her child have died following a tragic accident involving a vehicle transporting Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi.

The collision took place on the N1 near Bela-Bela on Saturday, 9 May 2026. The vehicle was being driven by a member of the Protection Security Services (PSS).

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the woman was crossing the road with her two children, one of whom was strapped to her back, after another accident involving her husband.

“He was allegedly struck by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer and died at the scene,” Mathe said.

Mathe said the vehicle carrying Motsoaledi then allegedly struck the woman and her children as they attempted to cross the highway.

IPID Takes Over Investigation Into Two Culpable Homicide Cases

Police have opened investigations into two separate cases of culpable homicide linked to the incidents.

According to Mathe, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the investigation because both drivers involved are members of the South African Police Service.
