The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed the death of former provincial treasurer Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba. He died on Saturday morning after being hit by a vehicle while out jogging in Newcastle. At the time of his passing, Mahlaba was serving as a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature.
ANC KZN Confirms Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba’s Death
The ANC KZN said Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba died following a road accident during his morning jog in Newcastle. His death has brought to an end the political career of a leader who held several senior positions within both the party and the provincial government. He was serving as a member of the party’s Provincial Task Team and chaired committees in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature when he died.
Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba began his political activism in the early 2000s while studying medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). During his time at the institution, he was elected president of the Student Representative Council (SRC), marking the beginning of his leadership journey. In 2007, he became a prominent figure while working as a student at Madadeni Regional Hospital.

His rise within the ANC continued in 2010 when he was elected Regional Chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Madadeni. Four years later, he became Regional Chairperson of the ANC, a position that paved the way for his appointment as Mayor of Newcastle in 2016. His leadership roles continued to expand over the following years.

In July 2022, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba was elected ANC KwaZulu-Natal provincial treasurer. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure before later taking over the Sports, Arts and Culture portfolio. He remained active in provincial politics until his death.
Outside politics, Mahlaba continued to pursue academic excellence. In May this year, he graduated with a Master of Commerce in Leadership Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The qualification added to his academic achievements while serving in public office.
