Five of the seven suspects arrested in connection with the murders of rapper Kiernan Forbes, known as AKA, and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane are set to make their first court appearance in the Durban Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.
This follows a year-long investigation by the police, who recently revealed the arrests. The tragic incident occurred in February 2023 when AKA and Tibz were shot and killed while leaving a restaurant on Durban’s Florida Road.
It is important to note that Tibz was not the gunmen’s intended target. While seven suspects were apprehended in connection with the crime, only five will be appearing in court. The remaining two suspects are currently awaiting extradition from Eswatini after being apprehended there.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe expressed satisfaction with the handling of the case, stating, “We are quite encouraged with how our team has also handled this case, it was quite complex, and we limited all communication and ensured that we are tightlipped for the sole purpose of ensuring the integrity of this investigation.”
In the wake of these developments, the Forbes family has confirmed their presence at the court proceedings on Thursday. Their attendance underscores the significance of this case and their commitment to seeking justice for the loss of their loved one, AKA.
The court appearance of these five suspects marks an important milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families. It is a crucial step towards holding those responsible accountable for their actions. The court proceedings will provide an opportunity for the evidence against the suspects to be presented and for the legal process to begin.
While the details of the case are still unfolding, the arrests and impending court appearance serve as a reminder of the dedication and perseverance of law enforcement in ensuring that no crime goes unpunished.
The collaboration between the police and the National Prosecuting Authority highlights the importance of a thorough investigation to build a strong case against the accused.
