The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has emphasized the importance of financial backing for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Cosatu’s Zingiswa Losi warns that while the president’s vision is promising, it won’t be meaningful unless the budget fully supports it.

With Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana set to deliver the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement in two weeks, the trade union federation stresses the need for concrete financial plans to make these commitments a reality.
Support for the SRD Grant and Social Relief Efforts
Losi also voiced Cosatu’s approval of the government’s decision to retain the Social Relief Distress (SRD) Grant. This grant, a foundation for a future basic income grant, has been a long-standing request from the Trade Union Federation.
Losi highlighted that, for many South Africans, especially the unemployed, the SRD grant is vital in ensuring they can sustain themselves during tough times. Cosatu is hopeful that the president will continue prioritizing the needs of the nation’s most vulnerable.
