Ukhozi FM’s annual Song of the Year feature has been a subject of controversy in recent years, igniting debates over which song deserves the top spot. Two years ago, the feature became the centre of a dispute between the station and former SABC sports commentator Owen Ndlovu.
Ndlovu accused the station’s business manager, Sbongi Ngcobo, of stealing his Song of the Year concept and profiting from it. Ndlovu took his grievances to social media and mainstream media, launching a campaign against Ngcobo and the station.
In response, Ngcobo sought legal action by approaching the Randburg Magistrate’s Court to stop Ndlovu’s harassment. She filed charges against him, accusing him of bullying and harassing her through his social media posts.

Amidst this ongoing feud, reports emerged on gossip sites claiming that Ngcobo had been suspended by the station pending an investigation into Ndlovu’s allegations. However, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has firmly denied these reports, labeling them as false.
In a statement, the SABC clarified, “Ms Ngcobo is not being investigated nor has she been suspended by the SABC as alleged in the public space. The SABC is aware of the variety of unsubstantiated allegations levelled against Ms Ngcobo and the irresponsible public statements, which are spearheaded by disgruntled individuals.”
The SABC emphasized the importance of accurate reporting and urged the public to ensure that the information shared is based on facts, without distortion, exaggeration, or misrepresentation. While the SABC acknowledges its accountability to the South African citizens and the public interest, it is essential to maintain integrity in reporting.
Furthermore, the SABC commended Ngcobo for her achievements, including Ukhozi FM’s recent win at the 2023 Radio Awards, where the station was crowned PBS Radio Station of the Year. This recognition highlights Ngcobo’s contributions to the success of Ukhozi FM and the dedication she has shown to her role.
Efforts by The Times Post to reach Owen Ndlovu for comment were unsuccessful. However, in an interview with Sunday World, the KwaZulu-Natal businessman expressed his determination, stating that he “won’t keep quiet until I get back what is rightfully mine.”
The legal battle between Ngcobo and Ndlovu is scheduled to resume in court on 20 February, where Ndlovu intends to pursue his case against Ukhozi FM and the SABC regarding the Song of the Year concept.
As this dispute continues, it is essential to await the legal proceedings and allow the court to determine the validity of the allegations made by both parties. The SABC’s denial of Ngcobo’s suspension and the emphasis on accurate reporting serve as a reminder to rely on verified information rather than rumours or unsubstantiated claims.
