Veteran actress Leleti Khumalo has a golden advice for young creatives aspiring to make it big in the entertainment industry: discipline.

Speaking at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Lecture in Durban, Khumalo emphasized the importance of self-respect and discipline as essential tools for survival in this competitive field.

The lecture pays homage to Simon Mabhunu Sabela, a trailblazing actor and South Africa’s first black director. Known for his iconic roles in films like ‘Zulu,’ ‘The Gods Must Be Crazy II,’ and ‘Gold,’ Sabela left an indelible mark on the industry.

His legacy continues to inspire young creatives, particularly during the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Tourism and Film Authority’s Film Month.

The KZN Tourism and Film Authority is committed to nurturing talent, especially in rural areas. Chairperson Nise Malange highlights the focus on linking culture and success to inspire young people.

Aspiring scriptwriters and directors from these regions have recently graduated in Durban, thanks to the authority’s training programs. Graduates like Amahle Khuzwayo and Makhosazane Lukhozi are eager to make a name for themselves, envisioning successful careers in the film industry.

Khumalo warns young creatives about the pitfalls of drug and alcohol abuse and stresses the importance of learning from industry legends. “Bab Mabhunu taught us a lot. When you have legends around you, take what they’re willing to give you with both hands and run,” she advises.

The upcoming eleventh Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards in Durban on July 20 will celebrate the achievements and legacy of individuals who have shaped the KZN film industry.

For young creatives, Khumalo’s advice serves as a blueprint for navigating the complexities of the entertainment world.
