The victims, Dineo Kekane and Ricardo Phenganane, both 24 years old, tragically lost their lives due to gunshot wounds. Mbali Magakwe and Ivans Lekala, also 24 years old, along with Goodwill Mdluli, sustained serious injuries but managed to survive the alleged shooting.
Constable Makau made his first appearance in the Ogies Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he faced two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. The case was postponed to March 4 to allow for a formal bail application.
The court remanded the policeman in custody pending further legal proceedings.
This is not the first incident involving a police officer. Last month, a 44-year-old police sergeant from the Akasia suburb in Tshwane was arrested in connection with the murder of her 40-year-old husband. The arrest was carried out by Ipid, and at the time, Shuping provided details of the alleged events.
According to Shuping, a commotion arose between the police officer and her husband shortly after midnight on January 28. It is alleged that during the altercation, the husband took the officer’s official firearm from her handbag and pointed it at her.
In an attempt to protect herself, the officer tried to retrieve the firearm, resulting in a scuffle. Tragically, the husband sustained four gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries.
