The Brakpan Magistrate’s Court has refused bail to former South African Police Service (SAPS) Special Task Force (STF) officer Matipandile Sotheni.
Sotheni is facing allegations linked to the killing of Marius van der Merwe, who was widely known as Witness D during proceedings before the Madlanga Commission.
At an earlier court appearance, Sotheni, through his legal representatives, rejected any involvement in Van der Merwe’s death and informed the court that he intends standing trial to clear his name.

The former STF officer is facing 16 charges, among them conspiracy to commit murder, murder and attempted murder.
The charges form part of an ongoing criminal case that has attracted significant public attention due to the profile of the deceased and the nature of the allegations.

In denying bail, the court stated that the prosecution had presented a strong case against Sotheni.
The matter is expected to continue through the court process as prosecutors pursue the charges against the former police officer, while Sotheni prepares to contest the allegations during trial proceedings.
