Talks aimed at resolving the City of Johannesburg’s R5.2 billion debt owed to Eskom are expected to continue on Tuesday as government and power utility officials seek a way forward.

Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is scheduled to meet with Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero and Eskom CEO Dan Marokane during discussions in Johannesburg.

The meeting comes after Eskom warned that it could reduce, interrupt or terminate electricity supply to the city if the outstanding amount is not settled. The utility has informed the City of Johannesburg and City Power that the deadline for repayment of the R5.2 billion debt is in June.

City Power Headquarters To Host High-Level Debt Resolution Talks

According to information available to The Times Post, Monday’s engagement to address the growing debt issue will take place at the City Power headquarters in Johannesburg.

The discussions are expected to focus on finding a workable solution before Eskom’s repayment deadline expires in June.
