Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has confirmed that arrests arising from the South African Police Service investigations linked to the Madlanga Commission will continue, following the recent arrest of alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi.

Cachalia made the remarks while presenting his department’s R127 billion budget allocation for the 2026/27 financial year during a mini-plenary session of the National Assembly of South Africa.

He also praised police for apprehending individuals he described as well-known “high flyers” who had presented themselves as businessmen and are now facing serious criminal charges before the courts.

SAPS Task Team Drives Madlanga Commission Investigations

Cachalia stressed that the South African Police Service has created a dedicated task team to deal specifically with matters referred by the Madlanga Commission.

“The SAPS have established a dedicated task team to investigate referrals arising out of the Madlanga Commission. The task team is making progress. Arrests will continue, as we recently saw with Brown Mogotsi.”

His comments signal that law enforcement authorities intend to pursue additional suspects as the investigation gathers momentum.

Most Senior Police Cases Began Before Madlanga Commission

Despite the recent wave of arrests and criminal charges involving senior police officers, Cachalia noted that many of these investigations were already underway before the establishment of the Madlanga Commission.

He said it is important to recognise that the majority of current prosecutions against high-ranking officers are the result of probes that predate the commission’s work.

The clarification comes as authorities continue to confront allegations of corruption and misconduct within the country’s policing structures.

The R127 billion budget presented by Cachalia is expected to support the operational and investigative capacity of the South African Police Service as it tackles organised crime, corruption and internal misconduct.

The funding announcement coincides with a period of heightened scrutiny over accountability within law enforcement and renewed efforts to restore public confidence in policing.
