Former North West premier Kaobitsa “Bushy” Maape has died at the age of 68.
His family confirmed on Sunday, 17 May 2026, that he passed away on Saturday following a short illness. According to the family, Maape died “surrounded by his children and family”.
In a statement, relatives described him as a man whose character left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
“He was a loving, humble, kind-hearted, and respected man whose presence brought warmth, wisdom, and strength to those around him.
“Bushy will be remembered for his caring nature, his laughter, and the love he shared with family and friends. His memory will forever remain in our hearts and his legacy will continue through the lives he touched.”
ANC Honours Bushy Maape As Robben Island Freedom Fighter
The African National Congress (ANC) paid tribute to Maape as a veteran of the liberation struggle who was imprisoned on Robben Island during apartheid because of his political activism.
ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said Maape devoted his life to the fight for freedom and the development of South Africa.
“Comrade Maape dedicated his life to the struggle for liberation, the advancement of the people of South Africa, and the empowerment of communities through education, serving the movement with discipline, humility, and unwavering commitment throughout his life,” Bhengu said.

“The ANC dips its revolutionary banner in honour of comrade Bushy Maape and extends its heartfelt condolences to the Maape family, his comrades, friends, and the people of the North West province.
“His life remains a testament to a generation of cadres who sacrificed greatly for freedom, democracy, education, and development in South Africa and yet are not in formal leadership structures.
“May his revolutionary soul rest in eternal peace.”
Bushy Maape Led North West Province From 2021 To 2024
Maape served as premier of the North West from September 2021 until May 2024.
He succeeded Job Mokgoro, who stepped down from the role, and previously held several senior positions within the provincial administration, including responsibility for Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) initiatives and strategic planning in the premier’s office.
Bushy Maape’s Education And Academic Achievements
Despite being incarcerated on Robben Island, Maape completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Economics through the University of South Africa (UNISA).
He later earned honours degrees in Developmental Studies and Economics from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), further reflecting his commitment to education and community empowerment.
