Shope has not only been a stalwart in the political realm but has also been an important mentor to many young women, who now hold significant positions within South Africa.
The ANC NEC member, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, conveyed heartfelt birthday wishes to Shope: “A very happy birthday to Mamshope. We wish you a beautiful day and a healthy, long life.
Looking forward to celebrating your centenary next year. Enjoy your day!” Shope’s impact resonates within her family as well.
Her daughter Lyndoll, who transitioned from the ANC to the Congress of the People (COPE), recalled her mother’s lessons on independence and democracy.
Lyndoll expressed her gratitude: “Thank you very much for showing us what democracy means… that is what democracy is and you supported my decision.”
Former deputy president Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka emphasized the importance of learning from women like Shope, who significantly contributed to the liberation of South Africa.
“Mamgerty has been a true leader to all of us… so we salute her for that role she played in nurturing the young women who became ministers, doctors, lawyers.”
As Gertrude Shope celebrates her 99th birthday, her legacy stands as a beacon of inspiration for future generations dedicated to the ideals of democracy and freedom.
