The recent general election in South Africa resulted in a Government of National Unity (GNU) as no single party achieved an outright majority. Ten political parties joined forces to form the GNU.
As President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to announce the new executive cabinet, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) residents are expressing mixed opinions on the government of national unity.
Many KZN residents are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new cabinet. They hope for an efficient government capable of addressing the pressing social and economic challenges faced by South Africans.

One resident expressed a desire for cooperation among the parties, stating, “I would wish that these parties be able to work together, and each party is able to have a representative as a minister and they must choose educated and experienced people in the field.”
This sentiment underscores the community’s desire for qualified and collaborative leadership. Some residents have specific reservations about which parties should control certain key ministries.
One individual suggested that the Ministry of Finance should not be in the hands of the ANC, proposing instead that it be led by an opposition party to introduce fresh perspectives and strategies.
This view reflects a broader concern about the need for diverse leadership to navigate South Africa out of economic difficulties. Additionally, there is a call for the Ministry of Home Affairs to be led by a non-ANC member to strengthen border efficiency.
There are also apprehensions about the feasibility of so many parties working together in the GNU. A community member pointed out, “There can’t be too many bulls in a kraal, who will lead this GNU because they are all leaders from parties.”
This statement highlights the potential difficulties in making cohesive decisions, especially on contentious issues like NSFAS, BEE, and land reform. The resident’s concern emphasizes the complexities of governance in a diverse political landscape.
