A 40-year-old man has been arrested in the Eastern Cape’s OR Tambo District after allegedly killing his 69-year-old mother. The suspect was detained by community members near Tsolo, about 40km north of Mthatha, following the incident on Friday evening. He is expected to appear in the Tsolo Magistrate’s Court next week on a murder charge.
Police said the woman was allegedly assaulted with a stick at about 6.30pm. She sustained serious injuries and died while being taken to hospital, where she was declared dead.
“When police arrived at the scene, community members were holding the suspect. He had been assaulted by community members and was also rushed to hospital under police guard,” police said.
Eastern Cape Mother Dies After Alleged Assault
Police said the circumstances surrounding the assault remain under investigation. The motive for the attack has not yet been established.
Acting district commissioner Brigadier Vukile Ntule welcomed the arrest but expressed concern over the death of the woman allegedly at the hands of her son.

“It is so disturbing that a mother and son relationship can end up in such a gruesome manner,” stated Ntule.
Eastern Cape Records Highest Murder Rate
The latest crime statistics released by the South African Police Service showed that the Eastern Cape recorded the country’s highest per capita murder rate during the first quarter of 2026. Between January and March, the province recorded 14.3 murders per 100,000 people.

A total of 949 murders were reported in the province during the three-month period, including 42 linked to domestic violence. The province also recorded 32 attempted murders and 1,134 cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm linked to domestic violence.
Vigilantism or mob justice accounted for 299 murders, 58 attempted murders and 266 cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm during the same period.
