A 29-year-old kidnapping victim has been rescued during a police operation in Welkom that led to the arrest of six suspects and the seizure of firearms, ammunition and vehicles. The rescue followed a coordinated effort involving several specialised police units after the victim was allegedly abducted at gunpoint. The suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday.
Welkom Kidnapping Victim Found During Police Operation
The Welkom kidnapping investigation began on Friday, 24 July 2026, after a 29-year-old man was allegedly taken at gunpoint from his home in Steyn. The incident was reported to Welkom Police, prompting the Free State Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, based in Thabong, to launch an investigation.
Officers later established that the victim’s family had received calls from the alleged kidnappers demanding an undisclosed ransom for his release.

Police activated the Welkom K9 Unit and the Parkweg Tactical Response Team (TRT) to assist with the operation. Intelligence gathered during the investigation directed officers to a property in Flamingo Park. Tactical teams moved in and surrounded the house before making their approach.
Police Arrest Six Suspects And Seize Firearms In Welkom
The Welkom police operation resulted in the arrest of six men aged between 28 and 46 after they allegedly attempted to flee when officers arrived at the property. Police acted quickly and managed to apprehend all of the suspects without them escaping. A search of the premises then led officers to the missing man.
The victim was found inside a garage with his hands tied behind his back. Police said he was in a severe state of shock and had suffered injuries to the back of his head as well as bruising to his hands and feet.

During the search, officers confiscated two handguns, ammunition and three vehicles. Further investigation revealed that one of the vehicles had reportedly been stolen in Winburg.
The six accused are expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026. They face charges including kidnapping, extortion, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. Police investigations into the case are continuing.
