Senior Crime Intelligence officer Ismail Dawood has been granted R10,000 bail by the High Court in Johannesburg after facing charges of extortion and assault.
The court also imposed strict bail conditions, including prohibiting Dawood from contacting key State witnesses.
Ismail Dawood Granted R10,000 Bail
The High Court approved Dawood’s release after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that his residential address had been successfully verified.
Following the verification, the defence approached the High Court on an urgent basis seeking bail.
The NPA said it did not oppose the application.
“The State subsequently succeeded in verifying the accused’s residential address,” the NPA said.
“Following the verification, the defence approached the High Court on an urgent basis seeking the accused’s release on bail. The State did not oppose the application, and the High Court granted bail accordingly.”
Ismail Dawood Faces Extortion And Assault Charges
According to the NPA, the charges relate to an incident that allegedly took place in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, in December 2023.
Prosecutors allege that Dawood assaulted the complainant during a meeting before demanding money, which was allegedly paid.

The State further claims that additional demands for money were made after the initial payment.
“The State further alleges that the accused demanded money from the complainant, which was subsequently paid at his instance. It is further alleged that the accused thereafter continued to make additional demands for money from the complainant.”
As part of his bail conditions, Dawood has been barred from contacting key witnesses involved in the case.

He is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday as the matter continues.
“The NPA will continue to present all relevant evidence before the court and remains committed to ensuring that the matter is prosecuted fairly and in accordance with the law.”
