Tragic news has emerged from Russia as the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District announced the death of Alexei Navalny, a well-known critic of Vladimir Putin.
According to the prison service’s statement on its website, Navalny fell ill after a walk on Friday and subsequently lost consciousness. Despite the efforts of medical staff, they were unable to revive him.
The exact cause of Navalny’s death is yet to be determined. The 47-year-old opposition leader had been transferred to the notorious Kharp penal colony, located 1,200 miles from Moscow, in December. Known as the “Polar Wolf,” this Arctic prison is renowned for its harsh conditions.
